Thematic Specializations

Overview

We recognize that Arts and Sciences students will pursue leadership roles in an array of careers spanning many different professional environments, and so the curriculum requires students select one of 6 thematic specializations and take six courses (18 credit hours) in that specialization: three content courses (9 credit hours) and three skill courses (9 credit hours).

Specialization may also include more restrictive thematic pathways (e.g. The Arts Leadership pathway in the Leadership in Society specialization, or the Environmental Leadership pathway in the Science and Innovation specialization).

Content Courses

Majors select at least 3 options (9 credit hours) from a menu of content courses that provide the background knowledge and expertise required for a career in fields related to each particular specialization, such as politics, law, business, sports, security studies, sustainability, and more.

Skills Courses

Majors also select at least 3 options (9 credit hours) from a menu of skills courses that provide career-specific knowledge and training such as:

  • Data analysis
  • Design thinking
  • Communication skills such as professional writing and public speaking
  • Internships and other approved co-curricular experiences

Must include 3 credit hours of Communications coursework.

May include 3 credit hours of Experiential Learning.
